How Does Sora Work?
Sora essentially combines the groundbreaking and successful concepts behind OpenAI’s other models with some innovative new ideas of its own.
The question ‘How does Sora work?’ can get pretty technical, so here’s the simplified version:
Sora has been trained on an extensive variety of video content, spanning everything from selfie videos and movies to TV shows, real-world footage, and even video game clips
All of this training material was captioned (primarily by AI) so that Sora could learn how language connects with the world around us.
Understanding Spacetime Patches
Just as large language models like GPT learn by breaking down text into smaller meaningful units, Sora essentially does something similar with video.
Instead of looking at individual frames, it breaks down the video into ‘spacetime patches.’
Each video frame is divided into smaller chunks, and the AI tracks how those chunks change over time.
This allows Sora to understand video more granularly and generate content based on a much broader range of video styles (without cropping or resizing them).
Creating Videos Using Diffusion
Sora uses a process called diffusion when generating video (which is also what other generators like DALL·E use).
The idea is simple: start with random noise, and then the AI refines it step-by-step, shaping it into the final video based on your prompt.
Unlike traditional video generation methods, which create frames individually, Sora uses this process to generate the entire video in one go.
The model also has ‘foresight,’ meaning it can actually anticipate future frames!
This helps maintain continuity throughout the video, even if the scene changes or the virtual camera moves.
Pretty cool, huh?
Sora seriously brings the term ‘AI-generated video creation’ to a whole new level!
The AI generative video tool essentially blends a deep understanding of both language and visual data with innovative techniques that keep everything coherent and realistic.

How Much Does Sora Cost?

Sora is only available within paid ChatGPT plans, with the pricing as follows:
- ChatGPT Plus: $20 per month. Includes 50 priority videos, 720p resolution, and 5s duration.
- ChatGPT Pro: $200 per month. Includes unlimited generations, 500 priority videos, the ability to download without a watermark, 1080p resolution, and 20s duration.
Sora Key Features

In addition to video creation, Sora also offers several powerful and dynamic features that give you more control over the entire video generation process.
Here’s a closer look at what Sora has to offer:
Video quality and duration
Sora’s flexibility in generating videos in various resolutions and lengths means the platform can accommodate various creative business needs.
Basically, you can easily adjust the quality of your video and specify the video duration to fit the scope of any project.
- Video Duration: Choose between a short 5-second clip or a longer 10-second video (depending on your content type).
- Variations: Select either 1 or 2 variations of the video (using just 1 variation will save you credits).
- Aspect Ratios: Create videos in different aspect ratios, such as landscape, square, or portrait formats, to suit different platforms or use cases.
- Credit Calculation: Click the ‘question mark’ icon to see how many credits your current settings will use, helping you stay within your budget.
Remix
The ‘Remix’ feature lets you transform your existing videos by simply adjusting elements (while keeping the original feel to them).
Whether tweaking colors, swapping out backgrounds, or altering other visual aspects, Remix is a flexible way to refresh and personalize your old marketing content!
This is ideal for creators or small businesses looking to update old videos, customize them for specific themes, or try out different variations for branding purposes.
Re-cut
With the ‘Re-cut’ tool, you can pinpoint key moments within a video and extend them to create more impactful or complete scenes.
This feature allows you to slow down or highlight the most powerful frames, allowing you to better control for pacing.
It’s perfect for refining storytelling, emphasizing critical visuals, or ensuring smoother scene transitions.
Loop
The ‘Loop’ feature does essentially what its name suggests: Create seamless video segments on repeat.
Whether for background visuals, entertainment, music videos, or animations, Sora ensures smooth and natural transitions between loops.
I recommend using this tool to extend memorable moments within a scene or maintain a consistent flow throughout videos designed to play continuously (on a loop!)
Storyboard
‘Storyboard’ allows you to generate particular shots within specific frame points along the timeline.
This means you can precisely control the visual narrative of your video, helping you tell a captivating, cohesive, and detailed story.
Blend
The ‘Blend’ feature lets you combine various video clips or styles to create unique and new compositions.
Essentially, mixing together different footage, color schemes, or artistic techniques is perfect for experimental projects or creative storytelling!
Whether making a mashup or exploring new styles, this feature helps bring your fresh and dynamic visuals to life.
Style Presets
‘Style Presets’ are essentially templates you can quickly add to your videos. They range from cinematic options to vibrant or professional looks.
These predefined templates help streamline the creative process, making it easier to achieve a polished, consistent style that suits your project’s tone with minimal effort.

Is Sora Any Good?

So, now you understand what Sora is and what it offers…is it any good?
I would have to say that overall, Sora is undeniably impressive, especially for a relatively new generative AI tool!
And while the videos it creates may not always look 100% realistic; honestly, many of them come close enough.
Landscapes, abstract patterns, and styles like cartoons or stop-motion animation often turn out beautifully.
Videos of people and animals can also look pretty decent, although it’s worth mentioning that they don’t look as good when there’s a lot of movement involved.
Just as AI-generated images haven’t entirely replaced traditional photographers or artists (but are still widely used), the same goes for generative video AI.
That said, AI (and Sora) still has a long way to go.
I can only imagine that Sora will get better and better as it continues to evolve. Watch this space!
Sora Alternatives
Undoubtedly, Sora is a pretty impressive generative video AI tool. However, many other Sora alternatives out there give the powerful platform a run for its money!
My top 3 Sora alternatives are:
1. Runway Gen-3 Alpha

Runways’s AI video generator, Gen-3 Alpha, is an online generative AI tool for video editing and creation.
Along with powerful text-to-video capabilities, Runway also allows you to transform video to video, add generative audio, add text to images, and more.
One of the standout features of Runway Gen-3 Alpha is that you can create a quick and professional AI video using image and text prompts (or just from a single image!)
This is perfect for creating captivating and realistic short marketing materials for your products.
Runway’s Gen-2 model is free, while the Gen-3 Alpha pricing model starts at $15 monthly for the Standard plan.
Under the ‘Standard’ plan, your videos can be 5 or 10 seconds long, with 10-second videos using more credits.
Sora only allows you to create 5-second videos (unless you upgrade to Sora’s highest-paid plan at $200 per month).
So, if video duration is your priority, Runway may be the better choice!
Runway stands out for its ability to produce accurate outcomes from brief prompts and images and its powerful camera control options.
On the other hand, Sora’s dynamic features, like Storyboard and Remix, empower you to craft compelling narratives that pack a punch.
2. Synthesia

Synthesia specializes in AI-generated videos with lifelike avatars.
This makes it an excellent choice for curating professional training videos, marketing content, or personalized messages!
Its standout feature is the ability to create videos with realistic avatars (over 120 voices) that can speak multiple languages, making it ideal for global businesses.
However, while Synthesia supports more than 140 languages, it doesn’t feature automatic translation, so you must rely on other tools like Google Translate to do this.
Other features besides AI avatars and 140+ voices include text-to-speech voiceovers, an AI script assistant, a built-in screen recorder, and AI auto-sync (available on higher plans).
Synthesia is cheaper than Sora (and the other AI video solutions mentioned), with monthly pricing plans starting from $18.
The platform makes video creation affordable, easy, and intuitive, especially for instructional and engaging marketing and training content.
However, it’s less suited for crafting social media videos and lacks some of the creative flexibility in Sora’s features, like abstract animation or dynamic visual compositions.
3. InVideo

InVideo is one of my favorite online tools for creating and editing stunning video ads from scratch.
The platform includes customizable templates, an extensive stock image and video library, and, of course, a text-to-video AI generator.
Essentially, InVideo allows you to customize every aspect of the video creation process, from transitions to music and voiceovers, through a detailed text prompt.
Unlike Sora and Runway, you can create long-form videos (up to 10 minutes per week on the free plan and 50 minutes per month on the lowest paid plan).
Therefore, InVideo is the perfect flexible and quick AI video tool for marketers and content creators needing to create longer videos.
With a completely free plan that grants access to AI features and paid plans ranging from $35 to $120, InVideo offers excellent value for money.
Honestly, InVideo offers more hands-on customization than Sora; however, it doesn’t yet have the same level of AI-driven automation for video generation.
And while you can create text-to-videos using AI, InVideo’s true strengths lie in editing and template-based video creation.
In contrast, Sora shines because it can generate videos directly from text prompts with minimal user input!
